What is a power pole and why does it matter?
A power pole is the vertical structure that carries overhead electrical conductors from the distribution network to a property. In South-East Queensland, poles are owned either by the network provider — Ergon Energy across most of the region, Energex around Brisbane and the coast — or by the property owner. Network poles form the public grid; private (property) poles connect an individual block to that grid at the point of attachment. Correct installation of both is essential for a safe, compliant and reliable electricity supply.
Network poles vs property poles
Network poles are built to the relevant provider's specification and form part of the public distribution system. Ergon Energy and Energex each publish construction standards covering pole type, height, crossarm configuration, conductor clearance and footing depth. Property poles, by contrast, are privately owned and connect a rural or residential block to the network. They must still meet AS/NZS 3000 and the network's connection requirements, and the owner is responsible for their ongoing maintenance. Knowing which pole you need — and who owns the one already on your land — is the first step in any project.
Timber and steel poles
Poles are most commonly Australian hardwood (CCA-treated for durability) or steel. Hardwood poles are the traditional choice for private property connections and are well suited to rural settings; steel poles offer high strength and long service life and are often specified for network construction. Heights typically range up to 20 metres depending on span length, terrain and clearance requirements. Selecting the right material and height is a decision best made against the site and the network's spec, not guesswork.
The installation process
A typical installation runs from site assessment and underground service location, through drilling and pole erection with a borer lifter or hydraulic boom, to crossarm and hardware fitting, conductor stringing, and final connection. Footings must be dug to the correct depth for the pole height and soil type, the pole set plumb, and all hardware torqued and checked. For property poles, the point of attachment must align with the existing consumer mains. A crew experienced in SEQ conditions — rocky Darling Downs ground, coastal sand, tight residential access — keeps the job safe and on schedule.
Borer lifter hire
Where a full construction crew isn't required, our borer lifter is available for hire with an operator. It supports overhead maintenance, the removal, relocation and installation of power poles, and securing poles while underground work is performed for councils and contractors. The unit drills and lifts across all SEQ terrain, and our operators are experienced in Energex and Ergon approved operations.
Working across South-East Queensland
From Toowoomba and the Darling Downs out to Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, the Lockyer and Southern Downs, the Scenic Rim and beyond, we mobilise across the entire SEQ region. If you are planning a new connection, replacing an aged or damaged pole, or need plant hire for overhead work, request a quote and our crew will assess your site and come back with a plan.
